Oklahoma GEAR UP program is a federally funded initiative by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education that helps inform and prepare middle and high school students for college.

Through activities, events , conferences, workshops, presentations, campus tours and more, RSC and other college GEAR UP liaisons work not only to educate students on how get into their college of choice, but to succeed academically and financially.

Donald Anderson, RSC’s GEAR UP liaison, said his job is a “recruiter for college.”

“Some of the students that I work with decide to attend college at another school other than Rose and that’s okay,” Anderson said. “I still help those students with any information they need through email and calling, but those students that do attend Rose, I can help them with anything they need.”

Anderson not only holds events and meetings to help students succeed, but he serves as a “one-stop shop” for students with questions about anything ranging from transferring to questions on financial aid, and more, he said.

“The GEAR UP program’s objectives are simple: help GEAR UP students be successful,” he said.

Since it began in 2012, the program has been successful. By fall of 2013, 19 of the 24 participating school districts were represented on campus; in 2014, that number rose to 24.

Aside from informative events and support on campus, GEAR UP also provides Parent Leadership Academies to assist parents in gaining skills and being better informed.

Plan4College Centers provide students and families with information on college, and encourages middle and high school students to qualify for the Oklahoma Promise Scholarship.

Anderson will host a GEAR UP meeting for graduates of the program’s schools on Feb. 3 from 12-1 p.m. in the Fountain Room of the Student Center.
