Nearly two dozen local organizations and businesses converged on campus for RSC’s annual free Community Health Fair on April 9 in the Wellness and Student centers.

The event offered the college and local community free access to a wide range of trained health professionals for advice, counseling and information, as well as medical, vision and chiropractic screenings, massages and more.

The Oklahoma Blood Institute welcomed volunteers to donate blood  at the fair.

Photography major Amber Vanderlinden-Redenbaugh was among students who donated blood, and she received information at the fair about obtaining a Life Alert emergency response device for her grandmother.

She said she thinks the health fair is “a good thing” for the community, and the vendors answered all her questions satisfactorily.

“They we’re all very nice and friendly,” she said.

“For people that don’t have time to go out—it all comes to one place to check out in between classes if you have a question that you don’t actually need to go to the doctor for. It’s just a nice way to get simple, quick answers,” she said.

Vanderlinden-Redenbaugh said she also learned about businesses that are willing to work with people needing financial assistance for more in-depth health care needs, like Variety Care, which offers a “sliding fee scale based on family income” for uninsured patients, according to their site.

Psychology major Andrea Jones said her Yoga instructor at RSC encouraged her to attend the health fair, and she visited several vendors including the HealthSource Chiropractic booth.

“I’m pretty happy I came,” Jones said, “I’m finding a lot of useful information.”

Chris Leland, director of health and wellness activities at RSC said the college partners with Midwest Regional Medical Center each year to serve the community through the health fair, which provides a “one-stop shop” for people seeking advice and information about their health and available services.

The Community Health Fair will return next April.
