If you are planning to run in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in April, RSC will pay for up to 75 percent of your registration fees if you sign up before March 14.

Chris Leland, director of health and wellness activities, is assisting students who want to partake in the sponsorship.  RSC will pay 50 percent of the registration fee for the 5K and 75 percent for the relay, half marathon, and full marathon, he said.

Sponsorship for the marathon began in 2012 with nine students. Twenty students have registered as of Jan. 24, Leland said. Two students are participating in the full marathon, 13 in the half marathon and five in the 5K. This is the first year the 5K will be sponsored.

Leland said that viewers along the sidelines cheer runners on all the way to the finish. “It is really a phenomenal event for the city,” Leland said. “I just love the whole shebang.”

Leland has run the half marathon three times and has completed one full marathon. This year, he said he is running the full marathon.

“I’m going to do it until my body tells me I can’t,” he said.

Leland said training is essential for someone who is running a marathon, or even a half marathon. As an experienced runner, Leland can offer some helpful tips to RSC runners. “Train according to your body,” he said.

Also, newcomers to this type of running should be cautious and not push themselves too far. Increasing one’s distance each week for several weeks is a good training technique, he added.

Eating and drinking right is also beneficial. “People who have never done it before need to be careful,” Leland said.

The annual marathon is held to show support for those affected by the Murrah Building bombing on April 19, 1995, and to honor those who lost their lives. The marathon will begin at 6:30 a.m. April 27.

To sign up for the marathon with RSC’s sponsorship, visit Leland in the Wellness Center by March 14.
