Headline: Resting the mind through a healthy body

According to the rate of American obesity has more than doubled since 1980 from 15 percent to 30 percent, with child obesity tripling.  So the question is how can Americans stop the rising numbers of obesity?

Jennifer Armstrong and Tanner Earls presented the Healthy Body = Healthy Mind workshop May 1 as part of the continuing Hudiburg Scholars Workshops.

As part of the workshop, Armstrong and Earls told the audience about the importance of exercising and eating healthy.

The effects of exercising and eating healthy are simple. They help a person maintain a healthy life style, increase daily energy, suppresses hunger, and boost metabolism.

If anyone is wondering how exercising can suppress their appetite, studies have shown that “a vigorous 60-minute workout on a treadmill affects the release of two key appetite hormones, ghrelin and peptide YY,” a journal released in the American Physiological Society said.

What this means for people who do aerobic exercises is that by running for at least an hour or more during their routine, their appetite lessens.  This helps to restrict the intake of harmful fats that were just burned off.

Newton’s first law states, “An object (or body) at rest stays at rest.”

Think about a long car ride from Oklahoma to California for instance.  Without stopping every few hours and stretching, a person’s muscles and tendons become stiff and reluctant to move.  The same can be said for sitting all day and not moving around, the more a person moves around, the healthier their joints will be.

When a person uses a muscle or moves around a chemical called lactic acid is released.

“Scientists have discovered that lactic acid plays a critical role in generating energy during exercise. Far from being the bad boy of metabolism, lactic acid provides fuels for many tissues, helps use dietary carbohydrates,” Thomas Fahey, Ed.D. professor of exercise physiology, California State University at Chico, wrote, “and serves as fuel for liver production of glucose and glycogen. In fact, lactic acid is nature’s way of helping you survive stressful situations.”

Besides the effects that exercise has on the body it also influences the mind in some spectacular ways.  Endorphins are released from the mind to help regulate the pain the body undertakes while exercising.  This also helps to alleviate other problems the body may be experiencing.

Other chemicals are also released that would not otherwise be circulated through the body without exercise which helps to regulate the normal functions of the brain.

With all this in mind, don’t forget to eat healthy.  It does not do the body good if junk is poured into its gas tank.
